The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is a one year commitment designed to provide post graduate experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients with Infectious Diseases. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is a 1,032 bed Academic Medical Center affiliated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Required rotations include 3 months of ID consult service, 2 months of antimicrobial stewardship, microbiology, critical care and infectious diseases in special populations. Other required rotations include longitudinal experiences in antimicrobial stewardship/infectious diseases leadership and outpatient management of patients living with HIV. Elective rotations include an additional critical care rotation, an additional special population, cystic fibrosis, travel medicine and emergency medicine. Residents are required to complete a research project, medication utilization review or quality improvement initiative, assist with pharmacy student/resident and staff education, and participate in journal clubs and topic discussions throughout the year.
The Infectious Diseases division at UH Cleveland Medical Center consists of both inpatient and outpatient services and is the primary teaching site for the Case Western Reserve University ID Fellowship Program. UH Cleveland Medical Center and UH Rainbow Babies & Children's are renowned for their robust antimicrobial stewardship (AS) program, which has been designated as an IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Centers of Excellence. The AS team is actively engaged in multidisciplinary research, hospital and system-wide initiatives, and didactic programs including a dedicated AS rotation for ID fellows, the IDSA AS Curriculum, and conferences for internal medicine and other trainees. The group publishes a quarterly newsletter and an annual guidebook and serves as the focal point for AS throughout the hospital system.
