Residents who complete this program are well poised to fulfill advanced patient care or specialized positions and board certification.
Norton Healthcare is a large health system employing nine (eight for adult patients, one for pediatric patients) full-time infectious diseases pharmacists located in the various Norton affiliated hospitals within Louisville, Kentucky. The infectious diseases pharmacists and residents provide patient care to a diverse, metropolitan patient population including a large critically ill population, many specialty services, and a pediatric hospital. Residents working alongside the infectious diseases pharmacists will practice at the top of their license to make recommendations through a novel and progressive Electronic Intervention Program. This team of ID preceptors constantly expand their well-established antimicrobial stewardship program and its member’s are recipients of national awards:
In addition to direct patient care, the team works in conjunction with the Norton Infectious Diseases Institute and is the home to the Kentucky Antimicrobial Stewardship Innovation Consortium (KASIC). KASIC is a statewide antimicrobial stewardship initiative aimed at addressing inequalities in access to antimicrobial stewardship resources led by and operated by the Infectious Diseases pharmacists. As part of this residency program, PGY2 residents have the opportunity to work regionally to promote antimicrobial stewardship. Residents will promote education through KASIC’s various platforms including X [Twitter] and LinkedIn to reach thousands of individuals nationally and internationally. Similarly, the residents have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with advanced infectious diseases research specialists with expertise in the field of clinical epidemiology and research within the Norton Infectious Diseases Institute.
The Norton Healthcare Antimicrobial Stewardship Program has been recognized as a global center of excellence by the British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy’s Global Antimicrobial Stewardship Accreditation Scheme. The program received a Level 3 accreditation, which is the highest level awarded, and is the first center of excellence in the United States. This designation acknowledges the excellent work done by the program and positions Norton Healthcare to be part of a larger conversation worldwide about antimicrobial resistance.
