Norton Healthcare - Louisville, KY
Full-time
Salary: $64,480.00 Annually
Application Deadline: Jan 7, 2027
Resident

Established in 2014, the Norton Healthcare infectious disease pharmacy residency provides broad experience in antimicrobial stewardship and infectious diseases. Norton Healthcare employs eight (seven for adult patients, one for pediatric patients) full-time infectious diseases pharmacists. The system has an established, multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship program with a mission to optimize clinical outcomes while minimizing adverse consequences of antimicrobial use — including toxicity, the selection of pathogenic organisms and the emergence of resistance — and to reduce healthcare costs without adversely impacting quality of care. By using a novel electronic prospective audit and feedback program, infectious diseases pharmacists can streamline recommendation delivery, allowing for easier tracking of recommendations and greater patient reach. Residents work closely with the stewardship team and gain experience with a variety of evidence-based stewardship practices.

Norton Healthcare has the largest clinical microbiology laboratory in Kentucky, processing inpatient and outpatient specimens. It is supported with numerous rapid diagnostic technologies, trained technical staff and a microbiologist with a doctoral degree. The close integration between the stewardship team and microbiology provides residents with valuable opportunities to understand how diagnostic testing can inform antimicrobial selection and patient care. Norton Healthcare is a training site for surrounding pharmacy schools, and residents will gain teaching experience by serving as co-preceptors for pharmacy students and PGY1 residents.

Norton Infectious Diseases Institute is home to the Kentucky Antimicrobial Stewardship Innovation Consortium (KASIC), a statewide antimicrobial stewardship initiative aimed at addressing inequalities in access to antimicrobial stewardship resources. Through KASIC, Norton Healthcare collaborates with infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship experts across Kentucky and neighboring states, providing opportunities to share expertise, develop innovative stewardship strategies and strengthen antimicrobial stewardship practices throughout the state. Within Norton Infectious Diseases Institute, residents have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with advanced infectious diseases research specialists and statisticians with expertise in the field of clinical epidemiology.
